How to Resurface Tile Countertops
Tile countertops are common in kitchens, providing a water-resistant surface ideal for the cooking conditions in kitchens. However, over time, the tiles can becomes worn and faded, sometimes littered with cracks or holes. In such cases, resurfacing a the tile countertop can provide a cost-effective alternative to a replacement. Changing the paint color can also help revitalize the countertop.

- Dropcloth
- Plastic tarp
- Masking tape
- Tile cleaner
- Hydrofluoric acid
- Scouring pad
- Bicarbonate of soda
- Small chisel
- Grout saw
- Mortar
- Grout
- Sponge
- Spray gun
- Primer
- Heat gun
- Surface coating

Seal off the surrounding areas with dropcloths and plastic tarps. Tape down the tarps with masking tape to secure them in place and prevent any unwanted spills. Also, mask off any fixtures in the countertop.

Remove any oils, grease, or dirt with tile cleaner.

Scrub on hydrofluoric acid with a scouring pad to "etch" the countertop.. Leave it on for five minutes and neutralize it with bicarbonate of soda and water.

Replace damaged tiles with new ones. Pry the tiles loose with a small chisel. Use a grout saw to cut around the grout if necessary. Clean to remove any debris from under the countertop.

Apply mortar onto a new piece of tile that matches the rest of the countertop and insert it in place. Let it dry before applying new grout around the edges. Smooth off with a damp sponge. Let it dry.

Fill a spray gun with primer and spray onto the tile countertop. Dry it with a heat gun for 30 minutes.

Mix a desired paint color with tile surface coating and fill into a sprayer.

Spray three coats of paint onto the countertop, letting each layer dry before the next coat. Apply thin layers rather than thick layers. Let the countertop dry for 24 hours.
